open wire

a proposal

1) Open Wire would be a shared RSS newswire of select items from independent, progressive and open publishing sources.  Participants incorporate pragmatic "open editorial" policies to create daily, or weekly, selection of headlines, essays, reports and streaming media content.

Open Wire is operated by participating websites and individuals, but is unaffiliated with any one organization or website.

Open Wire contents can be included in a web page automatically, delivered to subscribers via email, or incorporated into any RSS application.

2) Open Wire is a necessary and democratic venture:

The vast reach and power of established, corporate media conglomerates necessitates the creation of a shared, publicly-owned, progressive newswire.

Open Wire is a public project utilizing democratic ideals and simple pragmatism.

The proposed open wire will:

  • Provide a high-quality, free newswire service void of ads and promotions
  • Cover global issues of peace, justice, and sustainability
  • Highlight content from independent and "open publishing" sources
  • Be comprehensive and affirm non-violence
  • Be as transparent, democratic, and responsive as possible

Initial participants will revise the submission and selection guidelines that already exist at OpenWireWiki (http://inlet.freezope.org/wiki/OpenWireWiki).  Please use that site to share your thoughts about this proposal, and to participate.
